A two-day shutdown of the critical care burn unit at UC San Diego Medical Center for cleaning was routine and caused no patient problems, Dr. John Hansbrough, director of the regional burn center, said Friday.

The unit was closed for a complete disinfecting to try and eliminate bacteria and other problems that habitually crop up in intensive-care areas, Hansbrough said. “There was no health emergency.”

Hansbrough said the unit will reopen today.

Hansbrough said that the cleaning, which is done about twice a year, was undertaken after the number of patients in the unit declined to one person. That person was placed in the hospital’s intensive care unit without danger, Hansbrough said.
