Toro Golfers Rally, Place 7th in NCAA Tourney

Cal State Dominguez Hills completed its most successful golf season by placing seventh in the 16-team NCAA Division II national championship. The Toros were seeded fifth but did not play a strong round until the final day.

Their total of 1,230 at part-71 Waterwood National Country Club in Huntsville, Tex., edge Jacksonville State by a stroke. It was Dominguez Hills’ first appearance in the national tournament.

Sophomore Pat Burke was named to the Division II All-American second team and senior Mack Smith was made a third team All-American.

Smith had the best tournament for the Toros, placing eighth with 71-77-77-73--298. Burke, who had the Toros’ best average going in and was medalist in the first-ever West Coast regional, went 74-73-81-78--306, followed by sophomore Mike Strlekar at 83-82-75-70--310. Other scores for Dominguez Hills wee junior Charlie Worrilow at 77-88-80-77--322 and senior Mel Hawkins at 83-82-85-85--335.

Florida Southern won the championship with a total of 1,192, 10 strokes better than Stephen F. Austin College. Columbus College of Georgia, the top seed, had the individual medalist in Hugh Royer, who finished with a two-over 286 on rounds of 70-72-72-73.
