CITY 4-A SOFTBALL : Chatsworth Wins on 12 Hits and 5 Verdugo Hills Errors

Chatsworth High had 12 hits and capitalized on five errors to beat Verdugo Hills, 16-6, Wednesday in the first round of the City 4-A softball playoffs.

Chatsworth trailed, 6-2, going into the fourth inning, but took the lead on home runs by Valerie Arst and Chris Timchuck. Teammates Jill Clemens and Lisa Hughes helped out, both going 3 for 4.

Clemens, who replaced starter Litcha Ramos in the second inning, won her fourth game in seven tries this season. Chatsworth (8-3) advanced to the second round against Banning next Wednesday.

El Camino 5, Marshall 1

El Camino Real freshman Beth Silverman kept the Conquistadores’ record (16-0) clean as she won her 12th in as many games by allowing Marshall only one hit.

All of El Camino’s runs came on five hits in the first inning, starting with a solo home run by Karen Walker.

Kennedy 5, San Pedro 1

Pauline Madrid struck out five and scattered four hits as Kennedy (17-6) moved into the second round.

Madrid (9-3) received support from Diane DeTomaso, who hit a two-run homer in the fourth inning. DeTomaso was 2 for 3. Debbie Jones was 2 for 4 with a double and two runs batted in.
