Thunderstorms accompanied by high winds ripped through the Midwest, downing power lines and leaving two canoeists missing at a park in Iowa County, Wis., after lightning struck their boat. Fierce winds swept through a residential area, causing damage near Fond du Lac, Wis. Winds gusted to 70 m.p.h. at Farley, Mo.; 57 m.p.h. at Donahue, Iowa; 63 m.p.h. at Janesville, Wis.; 60 m.p.h. in portions of McHenry County, Ill., and 57 m.p.h. at Cedar Rapids, Iowa. In Michigan, thunderstorms destroyed at least one building, officials said.
