GOONIE TUNES--The music you might be humming when you leave “The Goonies” may well be the grand theme from “Adventures of Don Juan” (1948), composed by the legendary Max Steiner. It’s a major mood setter (along with a brief excerpt from Erich Wolfgang Korngold’s “Captain Blood”) during the pirate sequences of “Goonies.” Asked why there were no on-film acknowledgements of the music, Joel Sill, Warner Bros. vice president of music, expressed surprise.
Said Sill: “An unfortunate, strange, circumstantial mistake. By no stretch of the imagination was this intentional. There’s really no excuse for it.” A publicist speaking for executive producer Steven Spielberg reiterated: “At worst, it was an oversight; at best, an homage. Dick (Donner) and Steven are fans. It wasn’t an intentional oversight.”
