Dana Point : Coastal Panel Approves Violet Lantern Overlook

The public may soon have another place from which to enjoy the view of the harbor and the ocean beyond, thanks to Coastal Commission approval of a scenic lookout off Pacific Coast Highway.

The site for the overlook is a vacant lot, according to Grace Secketa, a planner with the Orange County Environmental Management Agency. The plan approved by the coastal panel will permit the county to convert the lot overlooking a bluff at the end of the Street of the Violet Lantern into a scenic viewpoint.

Turning the weed-covered plot into a place to ooh and ah at the sights would be “a simple job,” requiring a “little landscaping, some paving and a bench” as well as signs advertising the view area, she said.

There is not yet a timetable for the project, Secketa said.
