Seven people protesting animal research by University of California campuses were arrested in San Francisco for disturbing the peace as they blocked the entrance to a UC regents meeting. UC San Francisco campus police said the group was arrested after ignoring an order to disperse. About 100 members of the Animal Rights Direct Action Coalition picketed outside the meeting. The regents were not scheduled to discuss the subject at the meeting, but William Frazer, senior vice president for academic affairs, defended the university’s work. “I think research is being conducted humanely,” he said, adding that the number of animals used in research has dropped in the past decade.
