The U.S. Parole Commission denied a request for parole Tuesday by former Tennessee Gov. Ray Blanton, a spokesman said. Blanton, convicted of mail fraud and extortion in the sale of state liquor licenses, began serving a three-year term in July, 1984.

The commission, by a 4-1 vote, denied parole “because the offenses (Blanton) committed involved a pattern of corruption and multiple instances of bribery,” said Justice Department spokesman Joe Krovisky.
