Boy, 6, His Leg Severed by Train, Crawls for Help
A 6-year-old boy, his leg severed by a slow-moving railroad car, crawled with his limb in hand across a street for help, but doctors were unable to reattach it, police said.
Andreas Antonio Magana was in stable condition Thursday in the Ventura Medical Center’s intensive-care unit after the unsuccessful surgery, said Jean Franek, associate director of nursing.
The accident occurred at about 7 p.m. Wednesday as the boy was playing with friends, said Oxnard Police Lt. Gordon Hubbard.
The youngsters began climbing on the ladder of a boxcar moving at about 9 m.p.h., when Andreas slipped and fell onto the tracks, Hubbard said.
The eastbound train’s wheels severed his right leg between the knee and ankle.
The boy, clutching the severed limb, managed to crawl about 100 feet to a home across the street, where residents called an ambulance, Hubbard said.
