Media Critics: More Than Bashing Stars?
“High ratings are tempered” was the heading for the report on the Times’ media poll (Aug. 12). The “tempering” consisted of a response of only 23% affirming that journalism is America is basically ethical and of 40% affirming that the press abuses the right of free speech. In any other profession, such a moral censure would be a most disturbing piece of news; but in the Times’ article, one had to read on to Page 8 to find these statistics. Thus, the quality of reporting of the poll justifies the public’s lack of confidence expressed therein.
