Charges Dropped in Crash Fatal to 7 Springsteen Fans
Reckless homicide charges against a driver whose bus crushed a car, killing seven persons on their way to a Bruce Springsteen concert, were dropped Friday.
State’s Atty. Richard Daley said he was dropping all seven felony counts against Chicago Transit Authority bus driver David Johnson, 47. Daley said that an engineering report, expected to be released within three weeks, will exonerate Johnson.
The accident occurred Aug. 9, when the 18-ton bus Johnson was driving collided with a Cadillac carrying seven persons to the concert at Soldier Field. The bus rolled up onto the car and crushed it, authorities said.
The crash injured 60 persons on the bus, including Johnson, who was hospitalized with back injuries.
An attorney for Johnson, a 25-year veteran of the transit system, said Johnson had told him that the car pulled in front of the bus and that the crash was “unavoidable.”
