Golf Roundup : Randolph Defeats Sigel, Moves Into Semifinals
Medalist Sam Randolph, suffering lower back pain from the 15th hole on, beat Jay Sigel, 2 and 1, but a 1 1/2-hour rain delay forced a suspension of play due to darkness in the other three quarterfinal golf matches of the U.S. Amateur championship at Montclair, N.J.
Still on the course when play was stopped were Scott Verplank and Jack Kay, who were tied after 17 holes; Chip Drury, who was 1 up over Todd Hamilton after 17 holes, and Peter Persons, who was 1 up over Sam Farlow after 16 holes.
The quarterfinals will be resumed this morning, with the semifinals to follow in the afternoon.
Walker Cup member Duffy Waldorf was eliminated in the third round. Waldorf, of Tarzana, Calif., lost to Hamilton, 8 and 7, while Randolph, of Santa Barbara, eliminated Steven Serotte, 5 and 4, in his morning match.
Jay Delsing, a PGA Tour rookie, found the right groove for a day, playing an error-free round of nine-under-par 62 to tie the tournament record before the $300,000 B.C. Open was delayed by rain at Endicott, N.Y.
Coupled with his opening 73, the spectacular round on the En Joie Golf Club layout gave Delsing a share of the second-round lead at 135 with Doug Tewell, who shot a 67.
The 20 players who failed to complete their rounds will finish this morning.
Greg Norman survived a triple-bogey seven to shoot a two-under-par 68 and take a one-stroke lead midway through the $280,000 European Open at Sunningdale, England.
Norman, of Australia, had a 36-hole total of 135 over the 6,573-yard course.
