Sen. William Proxmire (D-Wis.) criticized the Justice Department for its investigation of claims concerning cost overruns involving 14 nuclear-powered ships made for the Navy by the Newport News, Va., Shipbuilding & Dry Dock Co. Proxmire said department officials “are guilty of mismanaging a criminal investigation” and announced that he plans to hold hearings later this year on the case.
