Westwood
Trucks arrived late Monday and Tuesday nights on Tiverton Avenue to haul away the El Greco, the historic apartment building that is being relocated to the Beverly-Fairfax area to provide housing for senior citizens.
The 55-year-old building was carved into four pieces and hauled to its new location, where it will be restored.
“It’s serving the double purpose of preserving a historic building and providing housing,” said Janet Witkin, director of Alternative Living for the Aging. The organization led the fight to save the 12-unit building.
The city of Los Angeles helped finance the $500,000 project and City Councilmen Zev Yaroslavsky and Michael Woo attended a party for the building Monday night in Westwood.
The Spanish Mediterranean-style apartment complex was modeled after the home of the painter El Greco in Toledo, Spain.
