Peter Butler, an unknown Canadian in a field of mostly unknowns, won the Toronto Marathon, finishing in a time of 2 hours 20 minutes 37 seconds. It was Butler’s first marathon win.
Sharon Crawford of Toronto was the top woman finisher. Her time was 2:50.04. The two winners each earned $1,800. About 3,000 runners competed.
Elsewhere, Leonard Hills, 33, of Klamath Falls, Ore., won the Portland Marathon in 2:19:42. In the women’s division, Portland psychiatrist Lynn Friedman Bernot was the winner with a time of 2:51:25.
