Hurricane Nele, which threatened the Hawaiian Islands last weekend but is now away from all populated land, was downgraded to a tropical storm Tuesday then later regained hurricane strength, the National Weather Service said.

The storm, with highest sustained winds of 85 m.p.h., was centered about 350 miles northwest of French Frigate Shoals in the North Pacific and moving away from the islands.
