After Pittsburgh’s offense drowned in a sea of turnovers and a drenching rain, embattled Coach Foge Fazio must be wondering if he’s ever going to get his head above water.

His tenuous job status became even more precarious Saturday as Syracuse beat the Panthers, 12-0, at Pittsburgh.

It was the first time Pitt had been shut out since a 17-0 loss at home to Navy in 1975.

Don McAulay kicked second-quarter field goals of 32 and 29 yards, and freshman Robert Drummond ran 11 times for 100 yards, including a four-yard touchdown late in the game, as Syracuse beat Pitt for the second consecutive season after losing 10 in a row to the Panthers.

Pitt fell to 4-4-1 and has won only 7 of its last 23 games, with 3 ties.

Saturday, Fazio’s offense generated 12 rushing yards in a second half in which the Panthers crossed midfield only twice.

The Panthers fumbled the ball away once and had two passes intercepted, with the Orangemen turning two of the three turnovers into scores.

An indication of the kind of day Fazio was going to have came early. After taking the game-opening kickoff, Pitt ran the ball on 10 consecutive plays, but the drive was halted when tailback Charles Gladman was stopped for a three-yard gain by inside linebacker Tim Pidgeon on a fourth-and-four play from the Orangemen’s 18.
