An animal welfare organization asked the secretary of the Interior Wednesday to step up efforts to save the last known black-footed ferrets from extinction in Wyoming. Only 17 or fewer are known to be alive.

In a letter to Secretary Donald P. Hodel, Defenders of Wildlife asked that up to six ferrets be transferred to the captive breeding installation at Front Royal, Va., run by the National Zoo, because winter usually kills many ferrets in the wild.
