Local News in Brief : 8 Hurt as Car Hits Others on Freeway

Eight people were injured early Thursday when a car drifted off the Golden State Freeway in Mission Hills and struck a car parked on the shoulder, causing a four-vehicle pileup, the California Highway Patrol reported.

CHP officers said three cars and a catering truck were parked for unknown reasons on the shoulder of the southbound lane north of Rinaldi Street at about 6:15 a.m.

A car driven by Lien Duong, 25, of San Jose collided with one of the parked cars, knocking it over, the CHP said. The overturned car was pushed into the catering truck and one of the other parked cars, the CHP said.

Duong was in serious but stable condition at Holy Cross Hospital in Mission Hills. Two passengers in Duong’s car, Lan Phan, 74, and Tom Nguyen, 12, were in serious condition at Serra Memorial Health Center in Sun Valley.

Five passengers in the car that was hit by Duong’s were hospitalized, the CHP said. Van Ho, 23, of Alhambra, the owner of the car, was in serious but stable condition at Northridge Hospital Medical Center. Trung Phung, 8, was in good condition in the hospital’s pediatric unit. No Lu, 23, Tuan Luc, 28, and Trang Lu, 13, were in serious but stable condition at Holy Cross.
