A herd of elephants trampled two telephone company employees to death, bringing to 16 the number of people killed by the rampaging animals in northeastern Assam state since September, a forestry official said Thursday.

He said the laborers were asleep Tuesday night when a herd of hungry elephants rampaged through their campsite in the Cinmara tea plantation near Jorhat, 1,000 miles east of New Delhi.
