Violence Forces Sweden to Shut Beirut Embassy

BEIRUT —
Sweden is closing its embassy here because West Beirut’s chronic violence has made normal work impossible, Charge d’Affaires Lars Bjarme said Thursday.
Fierce militia fighting last week engulfed the capital’s Muslim sector, where the embassy is situated, and trapped the three diplomats and the local staff inside for three days.
The move does not alter Swedish support for Lebanese sovereignty, he said.
