New Mexico Sets Record Against USIU
U.S. International scored the first basket, then was swarmed over by hot-shooting New Mexico, 132-95, in a non-conference men’s basketball game Tuesday night at Albuquerque.
The Lobos made 68% of their shots from the field and set a single-game scoring record, bettering the mark set when New Mexico beat Arizona, 129-98, in 1979.
USIU, which opened with a win over Point Loma Nazarene, has since lost two straight. New Mexico improved its record to 5-0.
Joe Yezbak of USIU led all scorers with 32 points and tied for the team lead with 8 rebounds. Charles Redding added 15 points for the Gulls and Rade Milutinovic scored 12. USIU made 36% of its field-goal attempts.
Johnny Brown, who was among six New Mexico players to score in double figures, scored 31 points to pace the Lobos. All 12 New Mexico players scored.
After the Gulls took a 2-0 lead, the Lobos answered with nine straight points. New Mexico led, 58-38, at halftime.
In the second half, New Mexico sent in its reserves, but the margin continued to mount. The 37-point lead at the final buzzer was the largest of the night.
USIU returns home Thursday night to take on UC San Diego. New Mexico is idle until Dec. 11, when it plays at Georgetown.
