Cypress Qualifies Six Wrestlers for State Tournament
Cypress College qualified six wrestlers for next Saturday’s state championships at Serra College.
Two Chargers, Brain Ranson (134) and Sean Goodwin (190), won their weight divisions in the Southern Central section tournament Friday at Mt. San Antonio College. Three others, Mike Cicello (142), Bill Weatherill (158) and Bill Flores, finished second in the unlimited division, and Jose Orozco (167) finished third to also qualify.
Ranson, a sophomore from Loara High School, is ranked second in the state, as is Goodwin. The Chargers finished second in the team competition with 67.5 points behind Bakersfield’s 75.5.
Golden West College’s Richard Brenton, wrestling at 190 pounds, won his weight class in the Southern Regional Tournament at Cerritos College to qualify for the state tournament.
Other county wrestlers who qualified included Golden West’s Mike Stevens (126) and Trent Kenney (142), and Rancho Santiago’s Than Tran (118), Robert Frick (167) and David St. Luman (177).
Palomar won the tournament while Cerritos finished second, Golden West third and Rancho Santiago fifth.
