Boston College’s Ruth Wins Outland Trophy
Boston College’s Mike Ruth, whose choice as a future profession will be between professional football and the priesthood, was named winner of the 1985 Outland Trophy as the outstanding interior lineman in college football.
Ruth, a 6-2, 268-pound senior, also was a finalist for the Lombardi Award, which can be won by a linebacker or a defensive end in addition to an interior lineman. That award went to Tony Casillas, an Oklahoma noseguard.
Ruth, Casillas and six others were in the running for the Outland Trophy, presented by the Football Writers Assn. The others were offensive linemen Jeff Bregel of USC, Jim Dombrowski of Virginia, Jamie Dukes of Florida and John Rienstra of Temple, and defensive linemen Tim Green of Syracuse and Leslie O’Neal of Oklahoma State.
