Israel installed the first Arab mayor on the occupied West Bank since 1982. Zafer Masri, chairman of the Nablus Chamber of Commerce and uncle of Jordan’s foreign minister, Taher Masri, said he did not consult Jordan or the Palestine Liberation Organization on his decision to apply for the mayoral post in Nablus--the largest city on the West Bank. In 1982, Israel deposed Mayor Bassam Shaka of Nablus and other West Bank mayors who resisted its occupation of the region, captured from Jordan during the 1967 Middle East War. The municipalities since have been run by Israeli military-appointed administrators.
