The Department of Commerce ruled that importers of the nuts will have to pay a countervailing duty, in cash or bond, equal to 56.86% of the value of the pistachios being brought into the United States. California growers--who had sought relief from the low-priced imports that captured more than 40% of the U.S. market last year--charged that Iran unfairly subsidizes its pistachios for export. The duty is calculated to bring the cost of imported nuts into line with domestic pistachios.
