A mother’s concern about cancer cases in her neighborhood has prompted a review by Madera County health officials. After her son was diagnosed with lymph cancer, Charlotte Pecarovich said she counted 23 cancer cases since 1962 at homes around the county-owned Fairmead landfill near U.S. 99 between Madera and Chowchilla. The county agreed to review death records for the last seven years to check addresses of cancer victims, and ground water samples will be taken this month. “We sampled all the way around the landfill last year, and there was really no problem with any of the wells around the landfill,” county sanitarian Janice Delaney said. “If we establish that there is a high incidence of cancer, then we will go in and do some ground water monitoring.”
