Women’s College Basketball : Gainey Helps Chapman to 57-56 Victory
Mary Gainey, a freshman guard from Mater Dei High School, made two free throws with eight seconds remaining Saturday night to lead the Chapman College women’s basketball team to a 57-56 win over the University of Northern Arizona in the third-place game of the Sourdough Tournament at the University of San Francisco.
Gainey’s foul shots in the one-and-one situation gave the Panthers a 57-54 lead. The Lumberjacks scored with three seconds to go, but it was a meaningless basket.
Chapman (9-4) trailed by as many as 22 points in the second half but came back behind the play of All-America forward Leone Patterson, who finished with 16 points and 12 rebounds, Gainey, who added 13 points, and Karen Hirsch, who had 10 points and 7 rebounds.
In nonconference action:
Cal Poly Pomona 83, Cal State Fullerton 71--Vickie Mitchell scored 25 points and Michelle McCoy added 24 to lead the Broncos past the Titans at Cal State Fullerton. Pomona (11-3) held Fullerton guard Robin Holmes to a season-low 13 points.
The Titans (1-9) were led by Felicia Benson, who scored 25 points, and Amy Torczano, who added 20 points.
In Santa Clara Tournament action:
Iowa State 64, UC Irvine 59--Stephanie Smith scored 14 points to lead the Cyclones to the championship at the University of Santa Clara. The Anteaters (6-5) were led by Valerie Dehn, who scored 19 points.
