Pacific 10 Roundup : Moscatel Gives Huskies a 70-69 Win Over Cardinal

Reserve guard Al Moscatel hit a jumper from the top of the key with seven seconds left to give Washington a 70-69 Pacific 10 basektball victory over Stanford Saturday at Stanford.

Moscatel, who finished with 15 points, fouled Stanford’s Howard Wright with 16 seconds left. Wright sank two free throws to give Stanford a temporary 69-68 lead. But Moscatel sank his jumper to put the Huskies back on top.

Stanford got the ball to freshman Todd Lichti with six seconds left. Lichti missed a jumper at the buzzer.

Stanford took a 31-30 halftime lead and led until there were three minutes left, when Washington’s Chris Welp hit a jumper and two free throws to tie the game, 65-65. The lead see-sawed until Moscatel’s play at the end.

Paul Fortier and Moscatel were Washington’s top scorers with 15 points each. Novian Whitsitt scored scored 19 points for the Cardinal.

Both teams are 1-1 in Pac-10 conference play and 7-7 overall in the season.

Arizona 62, Arizona State 53--Sean Elliott scored a game-high 17 points, including six straight to start the second half, as Arizona won a Pacific 10 opener at Tucson.

The win was the fourth straight for the Wildcats, now 9-4 overall and 8-0 at home, and also was their fifth in a row over their archrivals in the past three seasons.

Arizona State fell to 6-5 after suffering its fourth straight loss overall and fifth in a row on the road.

Arizona took the lead for good when Steve Kerr’s layin with 13:07 left in the first half started a 7-0 run. Another 7-0 string at the end of the half, capped by Kerr’s baseline jumper, gave the Wildcats a 26-18 lead at intermission.

Arizona State, which shot just 36% from the field (22 of 61) was led by Chris Sandle with 12 points.

California 84, Washington State 68--Chris Washington scored 20 points, and Dave Butler added 18 to lead Cal (9-2, 2-0) at Berkeley.

Otis Jennings paced Washington State (7-8, 0-2) with 18 points. Teammate Keith Morrison scored 15 points before he fouled out with 5:53 left.

Cal led at the half, 37-34, and scored the second half’s first eight points to increase its led to 45-34.
