U.S. Wins, 5-1, Finishes Third in Junior Hockey

Team USA earned the bronze medal in the World junior hockey championships Saturday with a 5-1 victory over Sweden on the final day of play.

In other games, the Soviet Union won the gold with a come-from-behind 4-3 win over Finland, and Canada took the silver despite a 5-3 loss to Czechoslovakia.

The Americans scored four first-period goals for their fourth victory in seven games in the eight-team, round-robin tournament. Jim Carson, Chris Biotti, Dan Shea, Steve Leach and Paul Ranheim each had goals for the winners.

The Soviets scored two goals in the final five minutes against Finland to record their seventh victory without a loss. Mikko Laaksonen scored twice for the Finns, who finished 3-4.

Canada wound up with a 5-2 record, losing to the Soviets and Czechs.
