Lakeside
A man and a woman bicycling along a rural road in Lakeside were killed Saturday when they were hit by a pickup truck whose driver allegedly fled the scene, police said.
The driver of the truck, Monica Rusconi, 26, was booked at Las Colinas County Jail on charges of vehicular manslaughter, drunken driving and leaving an accident, according to a jail spokeswoman and the California Highway Patrol.
The two victims were riding bicycles along El Monte Road in the vicinity of Lake Jennings when the truck struck them at about 4:15 p.m., killing both instantly, officials said. The truck, which had sideswiped another vehicle a mile away, stopped briefly at the scene of the bicycle accident before continuing down El Monte Road, CHP Officer Gerald Schry said.
Rusconi was arrested along El Monte Road at 6:07 p.m. Saturday, said a jail spokeswoman.
The dead man was identified as Thomas Milton Straus, 42, of El Cajon. The identity of the woman was undetermined as of Sunday night.
