Westminster : Ground to Be Broken at Senior Housing Project
Ground-breaking ceremonies are set Thursday for the 312-unit Westminster Senior Housing Development being built on the former site of the 17th Street School.
The senior citizen development will be constructed at Hoover Street and Westminster Avenue behind the school’s auditorium, which was left standing when the elementary school was demolished in November.
While the developer, Delma Corp. of Orange, originally planned to raze the auditorium, the City Council appointed an advisory committee to investigate possible uses of the Depression-area building, according to Planning Department spokesman Mike Bouvier.
The cultural advisory committee recommended setting up a nonprofit corporation to raise funds to refurbish the auditorium, Pam Von Haun, city administrative assistant, said.
The auditorium would be rented to schools or churches that wanted to stage productions there, she said.
