Alain Greer, a 6-2, 265-pound defensive lineman from Valley College and Polytechnic High, has decided to enroll at Syracuse University. Greer is being counted on to replace All-American Tim Green, runner-up in the voting for the 1985 Outland Trophy, given to the nation’s outstanding defensive player.

Rich Strasser, a graduate of Burroughs High who passed for 3,317 yards in 10 games this season at San Francisco State, has been nominated for the Bay Area Collegiate Player of the Year award. Strasser, a senior, led the nation in total offense at the Division II level in 1985. Earlier, he was named offensive player of the year in the Northern Collegiate Athletic Conference.

Desmond Cerceo, a former All-City quarterback at Granada Hills High, has accepted a scholarship to Utah State. Cerceo, who had been attending College of the Canyons, was set to go to San Diego State, but changed his mind after Aztecs Coach Doug Scovil was fired.

Mike Gillespie, baseball coach at College of the Canyons, and UC Berkeley Coach Bob Milano will be among the speakers Jan. 18 at a clinic sponsored by the California Baseball Coaches Assn. at Cal State Los Angeles. Admission is free.

Pepperdine University guard Grant Gondrezick, a 6-5 senior who lives in Calabasas, is leading the Waves in field goal efficiency at 58%. Gondo, who was the West Coast Athletic Conference Player of the Week three weeks ago, is averaging 13.1 points a game in a reserve role for Pepperdine, which is 12-2 with a game tonight at DePaul. Jon Korfas, a 5-11 point guard also living in Calabasas, has started 42 consecutive games for the Waves. He is averaging 10 points a game this season.

A testimonial dinner for Muir High football Coach Jim Brownfield, a former assistant at Cal State Northridge, will be held Tuesday night in Monrovia. Brownfield, in his 30th year of coaching, led Muir to the Coastal Conference championship in football and the state championship in girls track. He has won 417 games and 31 championships in five sports, and has been honored as a coach of the year 10 times.

The formal dinner begins at 6:30 p.m. Cost is $15.
