Publisher Calls Off Search of Offices by Drug-Sniffing Dogs
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The publisher of the Kansas City Star and the Kansas City Times said Monday that he would not use trained dogs to search for illicit drugs in the newspapers’ offices.
“The dogs have been canceled,” James Hale said.
Hale said in a memo to employees that “no such steps will be taken until I can counsel with a number of you and until I can explain more fully to the entire organization why I agreed to conduct a test here of several monitoring methods which I believe would pose no threats to anyone’s personal rights.”
About 50 employees had signed a petition against having dog patrols. One employee handed out dog biscuits. Hale announced anti-drug measures, including the use of dogs, in a memo last week.
