College Basketball Roundup : Georgetown Beats Syracuse, 73-70

David Wingate scored 12 of his 18 points, including the game-winning basket, in the second half to lead 15th-ranked Georgetown to a 73-70 Big East Conference victory over fourth-ranked Syracuse Wednesday night at Landover, Md.

Reggie Williams’ basket with 2:16 remaining snapped a 66-66 tie and put the Hoyas (12-3 overall, 3-2 in the Big East) ahead for good.

After Ralph Dalton made a free throw to give Georgetown a 69-66 lead, Wendell Alexis of Syracuse (13-1, 4-1) hit a jumper to cut the gap to 69-68.

Wingate scored the Hoyas’ final four points, including two clinching free throws with two seconds left.

Williams scored 17 points for the Hoyas, and Rafael Addison had 16 for Syracuse.

St. John’s 74, Seton Hall 58--Walter Berry scored 20 points despite a box-and-one defense, and the ninth-ranked Redmen limited the Pirates to 14 points in the final 13 minutes of a Big East game at East Rutherford, N.J.

The Redmen (16-2, 4-1) built a 48-36 lead early in the second half, but the Pirates (9-8, 0-4) cut the lead to 50-44 with 13:12 left.

Willie Glass and Ron Rowan scored four points each as St. John’s went on a 14-4 burst and sent Seton Hall to a sixth straight loss.

Memphis State 89, Cincinnati 71--William Bedford scored 23 points, and the No. 6 Tigers overcame the Bearcats in a Metro Conference game at Cincinnati.

The Tigers (16-0, 3-0) made 68% of their shots in the first half to build a 19-point lead, only to let it slip away.

Cincinnati (5-9, 1-3) sliced the lead to five with 14 minutes left before Memphis State regained control behind Bedford, who scored 15 points in the second half.

Memphis State tied the school record of 16 consecutive victories set in 1954-55.

Sophomore guard Romell Shorter scored 20 points for the Bearcats.

Oklahoma 94, Colorado 82--Tim McCalister scored 27 points, and Darryl Kennedy added 23 as the seventh-ranked Sooners opened their Big Eight schedule with a victory at Boulder, Colo.

Colorado (8-6) took a 51-43 lead by scoring the first six points of the second half, but the Sooners (16-0) had a 40-15 run to blow open the game.

Torin Williams scored 24 points for Colorado, and Randy Downs added 19.

Kentucky 64, Mississippi State 52--Richard Madison came off the bench to score seven of his nine points in the second half as the No. 11 Wildcats halted a rally by the Bulldogs and won a Southeastern Conference game at Starkville, Miss.

Kenny Walker and Ed Davender scored 15 points each as Kentucky (12-2, 4-1) took the undisputed lead in the SEC standings.

Mississippi State (3-11, 0-5) pulled within 43-42 with 12:04 remaining on a pair of free throws by Greg Lockhart, but Madison scored on a 15-foot jump shot, and Davender added a basket as Kentucky pulled away.

Raymond Brown had 15 points for the Bulldogs.

Kansas 81, Nebraska 70--Danny Manning scored 21 points as the eighth-ranked Jayhawks rallied to beat the Cornhuskers in a Big Eight opener at Lincoln, Neb.

Trailing, 37-32, at halftime, Kansas (15-2) went on a 17-5 tear at the start of the second half to take a 49-42 lead, and Nebraska (10-4) never threatened again.

Dave Hoppen had 25 points for Nebraska.

Louisville 85, Florida St. 64--Milt Wagner had 27 points, and Jeff Hall added 16 as the 18th-ranked Cardinals trounced the Seminoles in a Metro Conference game at Tallahassee, Fla.

The Cardinals (10-4, 2-1) built a 41-21 lead late in first first half but saw Florida State (7-5, 1-1) close to 44-39 early in the second half.

Louisville worked the ball inside and made 9 of 13 shots to pull away.

Cleveland State 90, DePaul 75--Ken McFadden scored 26 points, and the Vikings upset the Blue Demons at Rosemont, Ill.

The loss was the second straight at the Horizon for the Blue Demons (9-5), the first time that has happened since DePaul began playing there in 1980.

The Vikings (12-2) led, 47-45, and broke open the game with 10 straight points midway through the second half.

Freshman guard Rod Strickland scored 22 points for DePaul.

Indiana 69, Ohio State 66--Steve Alford scored 32 points and sank three free throws in the final 15 seconds as the Hoosiers beat the Buckeyes in a Big Ten game at Bloomington, Ind.

The victory ended a seven-game homecourt losing streak for Indiana (11-4, 3-2) in Big Ten play.

Brad Sellers had 29 points for Ohio State (9-5, 2-2).
