Defense lawyers lost another attempt to convince the judge in the Tucscon sanctuary movement trial to allow refugees to describe how they fled persecution and death in Central America. Lawyers for the 11 clergy and lay workers on trial had renewed their efforts, but U.S. District Judge Earl Carroll upheld his original Oct. 28 order ruling out a defense based on humanitarian or religious reasons. The defense said that the jury needed to hear the refugees’ stories.
