No evidence of criminal conduct was found in a General Accounting Office investigation of complaints by a ranger about drug inquiries at Yosemite National Park. However, the GAO report cited findings from an inspector general’s report issued last August that paper work and accounting practices were lax on drug investigations. Ranger Paul Berkowitz lodged the complaints about “unethical, unprofessional and perhaps criminal conduct” by other National Park Service employees during a congressional hearing at the park last October. Berkowtiz’s complaints stemmed from an investigation of drug sales by employees of the park concessionaire, Yosemite Park & Curry Co. The investigation resulted in 19 federal indictments and 38 convictions or guilty pleas.
