Heavy fog rolled in along the Southern California coast, catching some boaters unaware and resulting in seven distress calls from small vessels, authorities said. No injuries were reported, but lifeguards were kept busy from late morning through the afternoon with a series of boating mishaps and nearly a dozen rescues of swimmers caught in high surf. “People were sailing out of the marina like it was a summer day. Then the fog dropped and everybody panicked,” Santa Monica lifeguard Jim Doman said. The fog lifted by late afternoon, but authorities warned that warm weather on top of cold ocean water could cause similar conditions today.
