Mary Slaney was named winner of the 1985 Steve Prefontaine Award, given each year to America’s outstanding track and field athlete as selected by Track and Field News.

The three previous awards went to Carl Lewis.

Slaney set U.S. women’s records in 1985 in the 800 meters, 1,000, mile, 3,000 and 5,000. Her 4:16.71 mile was also a world record, and she was undefeated in outdoor events last year.

The award honors the memory of Prefontaine, America’s best male distance runner when he died in a May, 1975 automobile accident.
