A sailor was convicted in Newport, R.I., of stabbing to death his superior officer. A court-martial jury now must decide whether to make him the first person executed by the Navy since 1849. The jury of four officers and four enlisted men deliberated nearly four hours before finding Petty Officer 3rd Class Mitchell Garraway guilty of one count of premeditated murder of Lt. James Sterner. The conviction carries a maximum penalty of death and a minimum sentence of life imprisonment.
