Summer Start Slated for New Vail Ski Area
Construction will start this summer on a $6-million to $8-million ski area adjacent to the Beaver Creek resort in Vail, Colo.
It will be an integral part of the $200-million Arrowhead at Vail all-year resort development, which includes an 18-hole golf course designed by Jack Nicklaus, 170 custom home sites and a 54-unit condominium project. The Jerry Ford Invitational golf tournament will move to Arrowhead from the Vail course this summer.
The Arrowhead at Vail group, headed by President Jen Wright, is developing 2,350 acres of land owned by the Wedge Group of Houston. The ski area, which will eventually accommodate 5,000 skiers a day, is scheduled to open in December, 1987.
“We are not after convention business,” said J.J. Collins, president of Arrowhead at Vail Properties Corp., which is handling marketing and sales. “We are building a project to serve homeowners, their families and their guests.”
Prices range from $329,000 to $429,000 for condominiums and $195,000 to $325,000 for home sites.
Peter Seibert, founder of the Vail Ski Resort and chairman and president of Vail Associates from its inception in 1960 until 1977, will plan, develop and operate the new ski area. Seibert left Vail in 1977 to direct ski development at Snowbasin, near Ogden, Utah.
Arrowhead at Vail is located 12 miles west of Vail on U.S. 6.
