Beverly Hills Council Filing Deadline Extended to Tuesday

Beverly Hills has extended the filing period for City Council candidates to 5 p.m. Tuesday because of confirmation of Mayor Edward I. Brown’s decision not to seek reelection.

Brown, who had announced his retirement decision in December, recently hinted that he might run again. But he has decided against it, prompting the filing extension.

Candidates who filed by the original Thursday deadline include incumbent Annabelle Heiferman.

Others are Robert Tannenbaum, an attorney; Maxwell Hilary Salter, proprietor of a chain of clothing stores; Eugene Quash, a bonds trader, and M. Cynthia Rose, an administrator.

Candidates must pay a $25 filing fee and file 30 signatures supporting their candidacy. They may also pay another $200 to include a statement on the ballot.

The two top vote-getters in the April 8 election will be named to the council for four-year terms.

In Culver City, seven candidates have filed for two seats on the City Council.

Twelve-year incumbents Ronald Perkins and Richard Alexander have filed for fourth terms.

They will be opposed by Andrew Weissman, a lawyer; Jozelle Smith, a local newspaper columnist; Fred Ellis, a retired contractor; Richard Nielsen, a deputy attorney general, and Lisa Tracy, a security supervisor.
