A barge towed south from San Francisco may be the cause of an oil spill that tainted beaches and endangered hundreds of sea birds, a Coast Guard official said. Chief Petty Officer John Hollis said the barge, which left San Francisco last week, had lost at least 16,800 gallons of crude oil by the time it arrived in Los Angeles this week. Hollis said samples of oil from the spill will be compared with oil from the barge in Los Angeles to see if they match.
