Santa Monica : Zoning Amendment Planned

Los Angeles City Councilwoman Pat Russell will offer an amendment to the city’s general plan permitting the Venice-Marina del Rey Board of Realtors to change the zoning of its property in Venice from residential to limited commercial, a Russell spokesman said.

The amendment is needed because a new state law requires an area’s zoning to conform to the city’s general plan. A five-year variance granted by the city allowing the board to keep its office in the residential area, at Lucille Avenue and Brenta Place, expired early last year.

Russell’s amendment, which may be submitted this week, will contain a series of conditions prohibiting the board from developing the site, said John Hartmire, her press secretary. The conditions would carry over to any future owners of the property, he said.

Some residents have said that the change would set a precedent for other commercial changes in their neighborhood.

The Planning Commission will vote on the zoning change on Feb. 27 at the Van Nuys Women’s Club in Van Nuys. The change also requires City Council approval.
