Pacific 10 Roundup : Stanford Scores 62-56 Victory to Knock Arizona Out of Lead
Howard Wright scored nine points in a late surge as Stanford upset Arizona, 62-56, Saturday at Stanford to knock the Wildcats out of first place in the Pacific 10 Conference.
Arizona (16-7 overall, 7-3 in the Pac-10) fell into second place behind Washington, which is 8-3 after beating USC Saturday.
Stanford (12-11, 6-5) outscored Arizona, 17-4, over the final 9:12 of the first half to take a 30-20 lead. Arizona pulled to within 48-46 with 5:28 remaining.
Wright, who was benched at the start for missing a team meeting, made a short jump shot and added a three-point play to give his team a seven-point lead with 3:50 left. He finished with 11 points.
Steve Kerr scored 22 points for Arizona, 16 in the second half.
Oregon 60, Oregon State 57--Rick Osborn scored 18 points, including 14 in the second half at Corvallis, Ore., to give the Ducks their first victory over the Beavers in 15 games.
The Ducks last defeated Oregon State on March 3, 1979.
Keith Balderston added 14 points and seven rebounds for Oregon (8-13, 3-8), while Anthony Taylor had 13 points eight rebounds.
Darryl Flowers scored 12 points for the Beavers (9-10, 5-5), who have lost six of their last seven.
California 83, Arizona State 61--Kevin Johnson scored 20 points, and the Bears blew away the Sun Devils with a 19-1 burst in the first half at Berkeley.
Arizona State (10-11, 4-7) had a 16-10 lead when Cal (14-7, 6-5) began its surge.
Steve Beck scored 21 points for Arizona State, and Dave Butler added 17 for the Bears.
