One sailor was killed and another seriously injured when the motorcycle they were riding struck and sheared off a light pole on the Coronado Bridge Tuesday morning.
Michael Evans, 22, was pronounced dead at Physicians and Surgeons Hospital. Edward J. Hannigan, 22, was in serious condition at the UC San Diego Medical Center.
The California Highway Patrol said the force of the impact hurled the two men over the bridge’s railing. They landed below the bridge on Logan Avenue.
The motorcycle, driven by Evans, had just started onto the bridge from Interstate 5 when the accident occurred. The CHP said the accident also sent the severed light pole crashing onto Logan.
