Injured center Sam Bowie of the Portland Trail Blazers will return to Kentucky this week to consult two doctors who treated his broken leg while he was in college.

The 7-foot-1 Bowie, in his second pro season, has been bothered in recent weeks by severe pain in his lower left leg, the same area that was injured when he was at the University of Kentucky.

The injury caused him to miss two college basketball seasons.

Bowie missed 13 straight games for Portland before playing in three last week. He said after Friday night’s loss to Boston that the pain was so bad that he was considering sitting out the rest of the season.

Bowie was hurt Jan. 10 at Milwaukee. X-rays taken since then have shown that the leg is not broken.
