Community College Basketball : Horn’s Late Free Throws Lift Cypress in Overtime
Sophomore center Paul Horn made two free throws with seven seconds left in overtime Wednesday night to lift Cypress College past Rancho Santiago, 76-75, in a South Coast Conference basketball game at Santa Ana.
Horn, who scored 20 points, had sent the game into overtime with a layup at the buzzer. Rancho Santiago’s Mark Moses, a freshman forward who also scored 20 points, made a layup at the buzzer in overtime to narrow the final margin to one point.
Cypress (13-1 in conference and 23-5 overall) led by as many as 14 points, but Rancho Santiago (3-11, 15-14) battled back to take the lead, 53-51, with 8:06 left. The Dons outrebounded the Chargers, 33-19, as Howard Cole grabbed 18 in the second half.

Compton 84, Orange Coast 64--The Pirates’ Chuck McGavran had 10 assists to become OCC’s single-season assist leader, but it wasn’t enough to overcome a 20-point performance by Compton’s Chris Williams.
McGavran’s 211 assists surpasses the mark of 202 set by Craig Falconer in the 1967-68 season. Falconer, currently head coach at Costa Mesa High School, set the record the same year John Vallely set the school single-season scoring mark. Vallely went on to star at UCLA.
Compton improved its record to 8-6 and 16-11; OCC fell to 4-10 and 11-16.

Fullerton 81, Golden West 57--The Hornets, trailing, 29-27, at halftime, outscored the Rustlers, 54-28, in the second half on their way to the win at Golden West College. Rocco Myers scored 26 points and Jon Melton added 13 for Fullerton (7-7, 13-14).
Bryon Strachan scored 23 points to lead the Rustlers (1-14, 5-21).

Cerritos 70, Mt. San Antonio 50--The Falcons, the top-ranked team in the state, broke open a close game in second half at Walnut. Cerritos (14-1, 28-2) took advantage of 23 Mt. SAC turnovers. Willie Joseph led the Falcons with 18 points and Russ Heicke added 15. Mt. SAC fell to 8-6 and 18-9.
In women’s action:
Orange Coast 79, Compton 73--Melissa Fejdasz scored 21 points and Lisa Schumaker added 19 to help the Pirates defeat the Tarters at Orange Coast College. The Pirates, tied for second place with Saddleback in the South Coast Conference, improved to 11-3 in conference, 22-6 overall. Angel Wells scored 22 points for Compton (6-8, 13-13).
Fullerton 79, Golden West 54--The Rustlers’ Shanna Beer led all scorers with 26 points, but four Hornets scored in double figures to offset her effort. Sharon Lyon led Fullerton with 14 points and was followed by Stacy Rooney with 13 points and 9 rebounds, Rochell Seabrook with 12 points and Sandy Cotton with 10 points. Fullerton is 10-4 in SCC play, and Golden West is 4-9.
Rancho Santiago 68, Cypress 67 (OT)--Fia Leota made a free throw with no time on the clock to give the Dons the win at Cypress. Cheryl Hoffman of Cypress led all scorers with 22 points.
