Chris Evert Lloyd, displaying more of a power game than she possessed a year ago, defeated Peanut Louie, 6-1, 6-0, Thursday night in the second round of the $150,000 Virginia Slims of California tennis tournament.

Unseeded Robin White of San Jose, using a steady baseline game and some sizzling passing shots, upset eighth-seeded Barbara Potter, 6-4, 2-6, 7-6, in another second-round match. She will play Kathy Jordan, also unseeded, in the quarterfinals today.

The Lloyd-Louie match, a battle of identical styles, was more entertaining than the lopsided score indicated. The seventh game of the 35-minute first set contained 15 dueces and many closely contested points, but the 31-year-old Lloyd never showed signs of tiring.

“I felt pretty sharp out there and in control,” said Lloyd, who has been lifting weights as part of her training. “I have a little more weight in my shots now.”

Louie has had the poor fortune to be Lloyd’s opening opponent here two straight years. She lost, 6-3, 6-2, last year.
