Prep Baseball : Surico’s Three Hits Lead Tustin to 6-1 Victory

Steve Surico had three hits and knocked in a run Thursday to lead Tustin High School to a 6-1 victory over Bell Gardens in a semifinal game of the Tustin Tournament on the Tillers’ field.

Matt Lundin and Walt McMahon each added two hits for Tustin, which improved its record to 2-0. The Tillers will face Lakewood in Tuesday’s championship game.

Monte Roberts and Chris Floth combined on a seven-hitter, with Roberts pitching the first four innings and picking up the win and Floth pitching the last three innings in earning a save.

In other Tustin Tournament action:

Lakewood 5, Foothill 3--The Lancers scored two runs in the sixth inning to win the game and advance to the championships.

Eric Merker (0-1) took the loss for the Knights. Teammate Mike Grahovac homered, doubled and drove in two runs. Foothill plays Bell Gardens for third place Tuesday at 3 o’clock at Foothill.

Rancho Alamitos 7, Woodbridge 3--Pat Davis pitched six innings, allowed five hits and struck out seven as the Vaqueros (1-1) defeated the Warriors (0-2) in a consolation semifinal game. Rancho Alamitos’ Roger Carter had two hits and an RBI to help the Vaqueros advance to the consolation final against El Modena. Warrior catcher Cam McNee went 3 for 3, including a two-run homer.

El Modena 7, Don Lugo 1--The Vanguards broke open a 2-1 game with five runs in the sixth inning on their way to the win over the Conquistadors at El Modena. El Modena’s Cory Ahart went 2 for 3 with three stolen bases and an RBI. Chris Gallego added two hits for the Vanguards, who improved their record to 1-1 and advanced to the consolation finals.

Ed Villa allowed three hits during the final four innings to pick up the win in relief of Dave Black, who pitched the first three innings.

In nonleague action:

Mission Viejo 11, Warren 4--Brendan Murphy had two hits including a triple and four RBIs to help the Diablos (1-1) win at Mission Viejo. Kyle Abbott got the win in his first decision of the season. Warren is 0-2.

In the El Segundo Torunament:

Westminster 21, Miraleste 3--Al Rodriques went 5 for 6 with two homers and nine RBIs, Ryan Klesko had four hits and three RBIs and John Tazza had three hits including a grand slam to lead the Lions (2-0), who have scored 35 runs in two games. Klesko was also the winning pitcher, striking out six in five innings.

Edison 6, Culver City 4--Mike Crosby hit a two-run homer in the sixth inning to lead the Chargers (2-0) past Culver City (1-1). Jeff Kent added three hits for Edison, and Tom Thobe earned the win.

Trabuco Hills 16, Boys Republic 3--Catcher Jim McGrew had three hits and drove in a pair of runs as the Mustangs (2-0) defeated Boys Republic. Shawn Sherwood went six innings and earned the win.
